Yet somewhere along the way, the idea of a beautiful fragrance became closely associated with distant places and unfamiliar names.
We wanted to look closer to home.
To Kannauj, where perfumery has a history that deserves to be spoken about with pride.
ITRAAH was created around this belief: that Indian fragrance heritage can feel just as relevant in a modern wardrobe as it does in the stories of the past.

A City That Knows the Language of Fragrance
Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh — India's historic perfume capital.
Before perfume became a bottle on a dressing table, it was a craft.
In Kannauj, that craft has long been associated with the art of making attar.
The city is known for its traditional distillation practices, its fragrant flowers, and the knowledge of artisans who understand that scent cannot always be rushed.
Roses, jasmine, herbs, woods, and even the distinctive aroma of earth have found their way into the region's perfume-making traditions.
Among its most fascinating creations is mitti attar, a fragrance inspired by the smell of earth after rain.

The heritage of Deg & Bhapka distillation.
There is a particular beauty in watching a traditional craft unfold.
No unnecessary spectacle. No shortcuts disguised as innovation.
Just a process that asks for attention.
One of Kannauj's best-known perfume-making traditions is the Deg & Bhapka method.
In this process, fragrant flowers or other natural materials are placed with water inside a copper vessel known as a deg.
The vessel is heated, allowing aromatic vapours to rise and travel through a connecting pipe into a receiving vessel called a bhapka.
There, the vapours cool and condense, capturing the fragrance of the materials used.
Traditionally, sandalwood oil has often served as the absorbing base for these aromatic distillates.
The process may sound simple when described in a few sentences.
But the knowledge behind it is anything but simple.
The temperature of the fire, the nature of the ingredients, the timing of the distillation, and the judgement of the artisan all matter.
It is a craft that relies on experience as much as equipment.
And perhaps that is what makes it special.
